The word, ‘talent’ is far less important than people think. In my music studio, it is irrelevant to the enjoyment of learning a musical instrument. Anyone, anyone, anyone can sit down at a piano and with two fingers, explore the keys for their sound, to sing a few notes, to have a gentle relationship with the instrument. The same is true of the guitar, the recorder, and many other instruments. Just having a child’s curiosity and uninhibited nature will be enough! Sometimes, quite unfairly, people have been told that they do not have talent. That can be very cruel. I have helped many people to learn to match pitch and even to sing along with their guitars. Let’s rethink this word, ‘talent’, and realize that it does not have to stand in the way of enjoying the arts.
